“Champions. The ice-hockey players from Mexican National Team won the Championship U-20” (Photo and text: Archivo El Universal)
It can be true that the national ice-hockey team of Mexico U-20 beated Serbia and won the tournament – according the local media – the World Championship in IceHockey. However, the authors failed to mention that the „World Championship“ was held among one of the weakest hockey countries in the world – or even more – among countries that do not play Ice-hockey at all. Well, to be honest, they do – as well as the Czechs play cricket or the Vietnamese polo.
The Tournament in Mexico was a Division III Tournament. Nowadays, there are four levels of Championship U-20, and the teams from Division I will never ever play against the teams from Division III because of the incompatibility at the level of quality of the teams. In Ice hockey tournaments it does not function as in the football´s World Cup, where the weakest can play against the strongest ones.
The real Ice-hockey championship U-20 (Top Division) was this year held in Buffalo, USA. The participating teams included, as usually Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Slovakia, Sweden, USA...And the only champions who won the „Ice hockey World-Championship 2011 U-20“ were Russian. Just to remind, the Champions in the main category (men) for the 2010 were Czechs while beating the Russians.
I wish only the best to the efforts of the Mexican Ice hockey. But let say the truth, and let stay on the earth – in 2011 Mexico did not win the Ice Hockey – Championship U-20. Never say never, maybe one day the Mexicans will be the World champions in hockey, but first of all, they have to jump the huge abyss of 3 other levels of the world´s ice hockey. Good luck!
